Become Model

There are no sure-fire ways to become a model. It takes a lot of hard work, perseverance and a very thick skin! Most aspiring models envision being scouted by the top modelling agencies but the reality is that the number of models that were discovered by model scouts only account for a very tiny percentage of the total number of working models. There are, however, some tried-and-tested ways to get noticed in this very competitive industry.

The most popular process to become a model is to attend open calls at modelling agencies. An agency will advertise that on a certain day, they will allow anyone to show up for an interview. Depending on the popularity of the agency within the industry and the advertising done by its agents, anywhere from several dozen to hundreds of candidates could attend an open call. It is not uncommon to have a line extending for several city blocks.

Another option is the walk-in, where a model calls for an appointment at an agency and receives an interview for a particular date and time. The model then has an opportunity to show his or her portfolio.

Some models attempt dry calls to agencies. This is when a model mails unsolicited comp cards to an agency. While this sometimes works with smaller agencies, larger agencies are continuously inundated with these cards and requests for interviews and therefore frequently discard unsolicited comp cards, unless they see truly undeniable potential – but this occurs as infrequently as being scouted while doing your weekly shopping.

In recent years there have been alternative ways to become a model with the emergence of several modelling reality TV shows. These shows have proved to be incredibly popular and have spawned a plethora of shows in search of everything from male models to mature models to child models. However, without a doubt, the most successful and popular is the show that started it all, America’s Next Top Model. The show hosted by modelling giant, Tyra Banks, has produced its fair share of talented models that have the fortune of starting out their careers with a built-in fan base thanks to the show. This has proved to be a wonderful way to get insight into a very exclusive industry and has possibly made the modelling profession even more desirable than it was before.

These shows, however, are filled with ‘become a model fast’ and ‘instant fame’ promises. Those lucky enough to be picked for the show do gain all the benefits of being on a reality show, however being chosen from all the hopeful contestants is just as difficult as it is to be singled out in a massive crowd at an open call.

There is no formula on how to become a model; it takes a lot of hard work and having what the industry is looking for at any given time. Successful professional models do everything they can to stand out in the crowd. Contact us for expert advice on becoming a model.
